Agreed - Garmin is the way to go and there's no better choice than the Forerunner 305 (see here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSWCQA?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000CSWCQA for the lowest prices). It's the premium choice for serious runners and even though there are more expensive models, this is the superior choice.

With that said, as you're just starting out you might want to try out the Forerunner 50 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UW5SYG?ie=UTF8&tag=yoga089-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000UW5SYG) so you can see if heart rate charting is really for you. This model is about half the price of the 350 and whilst it doesn't give the same range of features and convenience, it will still give you the raw information you need.

Either way, heart rate watches are a great way to track your progress, and I hope yours continues.

Hope that helps!
References :
One word GARMIN
I have Garmin Forerunner 305 and i love it!!!
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=349
It has all information i need, speed, heart rate, elevation, calories, GPS! It's water resistant, and lots of other features.
Since the day i got it, about 2 years ago i can't run without it, it's one of the best gadgets you can get for running.
Also it comes with a small computer program, you hook up your garmin watch to computer and it uploads all your workouts so you can see on the map where you ran and you can track you progress.
GPS is very helpful.
I was doing trail run ones and got lost, so i looked at my garmin watch at the map, it shows you the path you were taking, so i just ran towards the start of my run. Lukily it was only about 7 miles away.

Garmin jsut came out with the new watch that is a bit smaller and water proof and longer lasting battery but it's more expensive.

Good luck running
