how do sports watches measure heart rate?

they have chest belts but how does that connect to the watch?

Most belts use an ANT transmission system, which emits a signal read by the watch. The belt measures the heart rate, sends the signal to the watch, and the watch displays. Simple.

Most belts actually do not use ANT. Most belts use a 5kHz signal. The technology started with Polar in the 70’s and is still used today. Some other digital technology on the market is used now, by polar and other manufacturers which is a 2.4gHz transmittion frequency(Ant and WIND)but those aren’t compatible with treadmills, ellipticals and other equipment. So the 5khz is still the gold standard
