It seems to affect the heart rate reading of other machines in the gym that are right next to me. The person on the other machine is not even holding the heart rate sensors and there is a heart rate reading.

Clearly it shouldn't be used as an accurate account of calories burned. There are a lot of factors that go into calculating how many calories are burned during an exercise. Even then, calories burned during the exercise is only a fraction of the weight loss equation. You also have to figure in the post exercise calories that are expended during your body's recovery and repair.
